American Dream

If Mozart could write the overture to Don Giovanni in 2 hours, why can't I
write a song in 25 minutes at Bill's Blues? Here's why. And how.
Marc Smith,
of The Green Mill's Uptown Poetry Slam fame, was hosting an
open mic at Bill's Blues Bar
in Evanston. I attended and partook but did not expect to find myself
in an impromptu slam competition with one of the other songwriters there.
The topic was to write a song about either George W. Bush
or Englebert Humperdink.
I chose the former and, after some sage advice and inspiration for
a motif
from my lovely and insightful wife, I came up with this:
Lyrics:
He ought to be well rested now
If it's true what they say
About a cat nap every day
He ought to be alert this time
If he slept all night
On his latest Crawford one-way flight
It's been a month of Sundays
For our chief executive
That's the American dream, baby
That's how you and I ought to live
Did you sign his timecard
He works for us, you know
You and me and Jeanene Garofalo
If you didn't sign it,
Maybe that chick in L.A. did
He'll explain it when he's back from Camp David
It's been a month of Sundays
For our chief executive
That's the American dream, baby
That's how you and I ought to live
Now you know who I'm voting for
In November 20 and 04
I'm going to get my money's worth and double
Four more years, no toil, no trouble
It's been a month of Sundays
For our chief executive
That's the American dream, baby
That's how you and I ought to live
