Bitter Sweetheart MP3: 648KB

Written about no one in particular, sitting on the SPAC beach in Evanston. It was such a "Steve" song that I had to reference the Rugburns directly. It just borrowed from them a bit too much. Competes with "Good In A Former Life" for shortest hook - it just depends on how you do the math. Does "bitter" repeated five times count as five words or one?

Lyrics:

My sweetheart's such a downer
Her life turned out so bad
Tom Cruise is not her boyfriend
Rockefeller ain't her dad
Can't stand any of her roommates
She wishes they'd all drown
They crank the Rugburns after midnight
The toilet seat is never down

Bitter, bitter, bitter, bitter, bitter sweetheart
I have a bitter sweetheart

Her boss is always on her
Case to finish some report
Called her lawyer and asked if murder
Was a felony or just a tort
Threw out her Nike sweatshirt
No sweatshop socks for her
Recycled Shoebox Greetings
No jackets lined with fur

Bitter, bitter, bitter, bitter, bitter sweetheart
I have a bitter sweetheart

Still drives that beat-up Gremlin
Won't buy a car brand new
She's waiting for the day she runs in-
To that old boyfriend, I tell you, she knows what she'd do . . .

Bitter, bitter, bitter, bitter, bitter sweetheart
I have a bitter sweetheart
