Ghost

Written in an Orlando hotel just before Halloween 1998. I was going to host a ghost-story-telling party and I needed something original. I turned out to have a brutal cold and was very lucky I had taped the song -- I played the cassette for my guests instead of trying to sing.
Lyrics:
The rules all changed for me
When I took on my new, subtle form
I'm weightless, massless, frictionless, and restless
Every now and every then I draw the shutters
To her westward window
She misses far too many purple velvet Utah sunsets
And when I touch her I'm just paying back a favor
When I haunt her I'm just evening the score
I go running through her mind when she's not looking
When I push her locks into her august eyes
She blames the rocky mountain wind
I crawl inside her half-lit cigarette
And try to scorch her lips
The way I always thought one day I surely, surely would
And when I touch her I'm just paying back a favor
When I haunt her I'm just evening the score
There was once upon a time
I thought I stood a ghost of a chance
I sit with Nick the driver, ride the 42 for free
I cheat at chess with Einstein on the Great Salt lakefront
Every morning at exactly eight-fifteen I see her walking
Her point of view is pointing straight to me
The way I always thought it should
Every moment left unspoken comes back unrequited
One day we'll sit reunited, spirits in the clouds
And when I touch her I'm just paying back a favor
When I haunt her I'm just evening the score
