Small Town MP3: 374KB

I may not respect John Cougar the way I do Mike Ford or Michael Penn, but I will say this for him: staring out the window of the Ann Rutledge, heading through central Illinois towards Springfield, it's hard to look at the landscape and the houses, some little, some pink, some both, and not have a tune of his pop into your head.

Lyrics:

Every day she's stuck in traffic
She inches closer, closer to leaving
Every dollar spent to get from
Here to there is taking its toll
And every way I look around it's
clear this town ain't small enough
Small enough for the two of us, the two of us

Every night she looks for stars
She's forced to settle for the TV
And every meteor shower missed just
Gives her cause to want to wash her
Hands of this and every way we
Look it's clear this town ain't small
Small enough for the two of us, the two of us

It's anything but drama that she want
Still every year I buy us season tickets to the theater
And I'm afraid our drives around bucolic
Haunts are serving as reminders every home should
have its own home town

And every time the radio
Is playing something by John Cougar
We look each other in the
Eye and think about the way
Chicago felt the night we met and
Wonder why this town ain't small
Small enough for the two of us
We wonder if this town is small
Small enough for the two of us, the two of us
